FACULTY OF JOURNALISM AND SOCIAL COMMUNICATIONS AT THE POZNAN SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (WSUS)

Contemporary media more and more often seek for people holding a diploma certifying their professional skills and proper work experience. To know digital platforms and use the Internet to its full potential are just a few out of many skills which are part of a journalist’s formation scheme; the one WSUS has been educating for over ten years in order to meet the needs of the 21st century.
The Faculty of Journalism and Social Communications, where students can take their BA and MA programmes, is one of the oldest at our School. It is worth mentioning here that it is not only the journalism programme  students can take but it is also the Information  Science and Librarianship. Multiple and vast application of digital techniques to compile and give access to their huge and still growing collections allow modern libraries to face challenges of today and become more and more computerized and based on modern electronic media.
Students of the Journalism and Social Communications Faculty can, just from the start, even before they choose their specialization, participate actively in the WSUS Centre of Journalism and Students’ Club of  TV Creators. This is an excellent opportunity to work with elder colleagues and share their experience. Due to the job skills developed gradually at the  Centre and Club plus the knowledge obtained on work organization, many  students start and develop their careers in media whilst still accomplishing their studies as full time students.
Apart from such basic courses related to their fields of study like Language of Culture Rhetoric and Eristic, Media Law, Journalist’s Ethics and etc., students show their great interest in Theory of Mass Communication, Media Communication, Non-verbal Communication or Social Acting.  Along with academic personnel employed, there are also leading specialists and practitioners strongly involved in the didactic process; they are with a long and standing experience in press, radio and television. Some of them, like for example Andrzej Niczyperowicz, are the authors of recognized books on developing and improving professional skills.
The Faculty of Journalism and Social Communications keeps close relations with the Faculty of Journalism and Political Studies at the A. Mickiewicz University in Poznan. The agreement is not just a signed document but on the contrary more and more often common scientific activities are realized and the knowledge and experience sharing is performed on regular basis. That knowledge and experience sharing is also vivid among students of UAM and WSUS, visible on different national conference forums.

FACULTY OF ART AT THE POZNAN SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (WSUS)

Not a common practice – the Institution of Humanities  with its independent Faculty of Art. The Faculty was opened in 2006.  It derives from the traditions of the art college called Schola Posnaniensis, a  well-known and respected institution in the last decade of the previous century. The decision to open the Faculty of Art at our School in Poznan, where there is a state institution of higher education with the similar profile, seemed to be very risky. However, the institutions do not compete against each other; on the contrary the education programmes offered by WSUS are alternative and complimentary ones to those offered by the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan.
The Faculty of Art offers two main programmes: Design and Interior Decorating. Lecturers and academic personnel are Polish leading and recognized abroad artists and performers who closely work with the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Warsaw and Łódź. Different specializations within our Faculty of Art result in a number of concepts of artistic research. There are some individual, unconventional and genuine studios like: Intermedial Drawing, Applied Photography, Artistic Work in Architecture, Jewellery Design, Stain Glass Design and Product Design. A great emphasis is put on developing and improving skills within the frame of narrow, niche-like specializations that are appreciated and seek for by the market.
Diploma examinations  draw the attention of a big audience, including students from other faculties. The same applies to numerous exhibitions and displays of students’ work organized by the Faculty of Art at the end of a semester or when an interesting project ends. This gives a great opportunity for the whole School to see the results and outcome of our students’ work.
Moreover, the Faculty of Arts means also success stores of our academic personnel and students, both at a national and international level. Works of individual lecturers presented at local exhibitions or displays and those exhibited abroad always receive a good coverage and evoke a big interest. It’s worth mentioning here the exhibitions of professor A.M. Łubowski in Calgary in Canada and dr. A. Marcinkowski in Japan. Works of our students are also awarded, e.g. in 2008 the collection of works by Magdalena Muzyka, the student of the 2nd year at the Design programme, reach a semi-final at a very prestigious competition called ‘Warsaw Street Fashion’ and was presented during a public show at Warsaw’s Nowy Świat, which is a cultural and artistic heart of the capital.

FACULTY OF LAW AT THE POZNAN SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (WSUS)

5-year one-tier LLM programme at the Faculty of Law, which is the youngest of our faculties, places itself on a specific position. It cooperates closely with the  twin Faculty of Law and Administration at the A. Mickiewicz University, a state university in Poznan. The range of common activities and initiatives is quite vast. This allows to harmonise and unify the programmes at the two faculties. As a result of it we have academic conferences and intercollegiate students’ scientific groups.
Law means not only studying theory; it is hard to imagine a student of law without an apprenticeship. That’s why in our lectures and classes are conducted by academic specialists along with leading and distinguished legal practitioners. Thanks to them the graduates completing their studies will be able to extend their theoretical knowledge by obtaining some practical skills and,  then in future, use them appropriately, shall a need arise.
Law studies not necessarily must mean preparing oneself to become a legal advisor, lawyer, solicitor, notary public, public prosecutor, court executive officer or the most traditional one - a judge. The graduates of the department can start their professional careers in public administration or local self-government units, where a thorough legal education and the knowledge of legal acts and codes is required.
It is worth mentioning and remembering that on graduation, students of law at our school with their LLM diplomas can continue their scientific career paths.  They have access to further doctorate studies at any institution offering such programmes. Basic courses include: jurisprudence, legal logic, constitutional law, criminal law, administrative law, civil law, administrative, civil and criminal proceedings. Specialised courses at our school include: Roman law, EU law, International public law  This not only means acquiring new and fascinating areas of knowledge but also logical and very conscious investment in the development of your professional career and your own place on a more and more demanding job market.
